Tonganoxie Comunity Historical Society program to feature journalist and historian Tuesday

The Tonganoxie Community Historical Society’s Fourth Tuesday Program this month will focus farmers markets and more.

Journalist and historian Cindy Higgins with her programs “Fresh Produce: Kansas’ Orchardists, Market Growers and Truck Farmers.”

The program will explore Kansas’ commercial specialty crops, agricultural experimentation, horticultural “royalty” marketing and the evolving local foods movement. The presentation will also focus on Kansas’ nationally known heritage apple, the crabapple king’s downfall, successful gardening techniques of freed slaves and the state’s connection to exotic fruit introduction, future outlooks for Kansas agriculture and county-specific produce projections.

The program will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the TCHS museum site.

All are welcome for the free program. Refreshments will be served following the program.
