Tonganoxie women sentenced in animal cruelty case

The Leavenworth County Justice Center at 601 S. Third St., LeavenworthTwo Tonganoxie woman have been sentenced in an animal cruelty case.
Jessica L. Fleer, 35, and Amanda E. Fleer, 42, were sentenced Friday in Leavenworth County District Court, per a release from the office of Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
According to court documents filed Feb. 19, the charges stemmed from an Oct. 17, 2024, incident in which a black poodle, about 2 years old, was found in the middle of Tonganoxie Drive near 199th Street. Two people captured the dog and took it to a veterinarian for treatment.
Court records state the poodle was severely malnourished, infested with fleas and had matted fur.
A scan of the dog’s microchip revealed that Jessica and Amanda Fleer owned the dog.
On Aug. 15, Amanda Fleer pleaded no contest and was found guilty of cruelty to animals. On Aug. 22, Jessica Fleer also pleaded no contest and was found guilty.
Amanda Fleer was sentenced to six months in the Leavenworth County Jail, but the judge suspended the sentence and placed her on one year of supervised probation.

Both women were ordered to serve 50 hours of community service, not to own or care for any animals for the term of their probation, and to pay a total of $1,542 in restitution jointly to the Leavenworth County Humane Society.
“This case sends a clear message: we take animal abuse seriously, and we will hold offenders accountable,” Thompson said. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who played a role in bringing justice. If you know of animals being harmed, please speak up and report it to the proper authorities.”
