A crowd of roughly 150 attended Sunday’s kickoff meeting for the Tonganoxie Citizens Against Bluestem group.

The organization recently formed amid the potential for a 500-acre plus mega data center south of Tonganoxie. Bluestem is the company working to secure space for a future center.

Leavenworth County Commissioner Mike Stieben, Sierra Club representative and rural Tonganoxie resident Zach Pistora and former state representative Jim Karleskint were among speakers at Tonganoxie VFW Post Home. Tonganoxie USD 464 Board Member Evan Dean also spoke at the meeting, with CAB organizer Becky Davis introducing speakers and helping field questions from the crowd.

Speakers discussed concerns about noise, sound, light and air pollution if such a large-scale data center were built.

“We’re not anti-business, but we want good neighbors and the rural community we love,” Davis said.

Davis announced that CAB was working to complete a petition for the city of Tonganoxie to place an 18-month moratorium on any services to such a center. The petition needs 300 signatures of registered voters who reside within Tonganoxie city limits. For more about the organization, visit tongiecab.com.
