Youths take audiences on trip to Oz at TPAC

Local youths perform a scene from “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” this past week at the Tonganoxie Performing Arts Center on the Tonganoxie High School campus.

Tonganoxie Recreation Commission’s Summer Spotlight theater production focused on the Emerald City on Thursday and Friday at Tonganoxie Performing Arts Center.

Youths offered performances of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” on the Tonganoxie High School campus those days.

Carter Shepard played the role of the Wizard of Oz, while Rosemary Ottens was Dorothy. Aireana Helms-Jones was Scarecrow and Adam Fitzpatrick the Tinman. Lucas Lightner played the Cowardly Lion, while Hazel Brumley was Toto.

Sadie Lanier played the role of the Wicked Witch opposite Madeline Pavlovich as Glinda the Good Witch.

Additional roles were Aunt Em, Nevaeh Shriner; Uncle Henry, Aaron Deason; Munchkin Mayor, Fern Town; Munchkin Woman, Pria Vennum; Flying Monkey Captain, Adalynn Taves; Fighting Tree Leader, Jackson Brassfield; Queen of Field Mice, Ava Kirby; Gate Guardian, Paisley Shriner; Emerald Soldier, Oscar Gardner; Wildcat, Mallory Liby; Tiger, Sophia Brassfield; Wolf, Nora Johnson; and Fighting Trees, Jeffery Town and Andrew Pavlovich.

Director was Jacob Brents and assistant directors were Taylor Brents, Lachlan Bond, Kate Carter and Chaynee Howell.

The play started on the farm in Kansas and spun into Munchkinland. Dorothy then met the witches and acquired the magic shoes before fighting off wild beasts and fighting trees to meet the scarecrow, tinman and lion. They then met the residents of the Emerald City and the Wizard himself before being captured by flying monkeys. Dorothy then defeated the Wicked Witch. She returned the witch’s hat to the Wizard and discovered his true identity; and then spun back to Kansas.

Admission was free, but guests were encouraged to bring food donations for Good Shepherd Thrift Shop and Food Bank.
