ATOP THE MOUNTAIN: Tonganoxie boys wrestling wins 4A state team title in Salina

Tonganoxie High boys wrestling team members display their new state trophy Saturday at the THS wrestling room. Tonganoie won its second state team title.The Tonganoxie High boys wrestling team has knocked off the two-time defending state champion and earned its second state crown in program history.
THS scored 152 points at this year’s Class 4A state championships at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. Tonganoxie had the lead after Day 1 Friday and stayed atop the standings when all matches had been completed. Tonganoxie finished ahead of back-to-back defending champion Rose Hill. The Rockets finished in second with 137.5.
Brady Martin medaled for the fourth time at state and won his first state title Saturday in Salina after going 4-0 at the championships. Martin became the all-time career wins leader for THS earlier this season and capped his tenure at THS with a gold medal this weekend in Salina.
Autumn Wilson also reached the pinnacle on the girls side with a gold medal in her senior campaign. Kaylee Pankey also won an individual title for the girls team. Although the THS girls weren’t able to repeat as state champions, they did finish seventh this year with 72 points. Wellsville won the team title with 101.5, just ahead of Colby (99).
Fans welcomed the team home around 10:30 p.m. Saturday near the THS wrestling room in the USD 464 Administrative Center. Fireworks also went off to the west after the team arrived with its Tonganoxie police and fire escort.
McLouth wrester earns bronze at 3-2-1A state
McLouth’s Makinley Daniels placed third at this year’s 3-2-1A state championships at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
Daniels won the consolation finals with a 4-2 decision against Minneapolis’ Quinley Bohl.
Lily Perkins also competed for the Bulldogs at 145. She won her opening round match, but then lost in the quarterfinals and in the consolation bracket.
The McLouth girls scored 24 points at this year’s 3-2-1A state championships in Hays.
Basehor-Linwood sweeps 5A team titles
It was a banner day for the Basehor-Linwood wrestling teams at Hartman Arena near Wichita.
BLHS swept the 5A team titles with the girls scoring 200.5. Kapaun Mount Carmel took second with 157. The Bobcats also won the boys title with 169.5 points. Goddard took second with 131.
In 6A, the Maize boys won with 237, ahead of Manhattan’s runner-up score of 192.5. The Garden City girls scored 226.5 for the title. Gardner-Edgerton scored 197 for second.
In 3-2-1A, Hoxie dominated the boys standings with 196.5, nearly 100 points ahead of Caney Valley and Atchison County. Both teams scored 99. Russell won the girls title with 156, with Norton coming in second with 143.
