Leavenworth County election.

The general election is roughly a month away, but one race that was thought to be uncontested now has a challenger.

Anyone driving through Tonganoxie and the surrounding area will notice political signs for a write-in campaign.

Todd Lux, a longtime Tonganoxie business owner, started a write-in campaign for Leavenworth County Commission a few weeks ago. Lux, who has owned Todd’s Tire in Tonganoxie for several years, recently sold the business and has since entered the race against Republican incumbent Mike Stieben in the Fifth District. Stieben defeated Brad Noll with roughly 75% of the vote.

Though Lux’s name won’t be on the ballot, voters can cast a vote for him by writing his name in for the Leavenworth County Commission Fifth District race.

Polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Election Day, which is Nov. 8 this year.

Satellite voting also will be available 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 2 at Basehor United Methodist Church and noon-6 p.m. Nov. 3 at Tonganoxie VFW Post 9271.

Voter registration closes next week for the general election. Registration closes Tuesday at the Leavenworth County Courthouse, 300 Walnut St., Suite 106.

Advance voting by mail and in person at the courthouse begins Oct. 19, with advance voting in person set to end at noon Nov. 7.
