Tonganoxie High boys wrestling takes 4th at Iowa tournament; Baldwin invite is next

Tonganoxie High boys wrestling held its own at Saturday’s Herb Irgens Invitational in Ida Grove, Iowa.

THS finished fourth at the 25-team tournament, scoring 155 points. Don Bosco (Iowa) won the meet with 271 points.

Braeden Moore and Colton Brusven both won gold medals for the Chieftains at the Iowa tournament.

Moore won the 132-pound title with a victory against Sergeant Bluff-Luton sophomore Bo Koedam (34-6). The THS junior improved to 22-1 with the championship pin. Brusven was the top wrestler at 170. The THS junior moved to 18-5 after defeating Don Bosco senior Jacob Thiry (24-11) by a 5-2 decision.

Hunter Benedict moved to 24-7 with his performance at the Iowa tournament. The THS senior lost to Don Bosco senior Jared Thiry (30-3) by technical fall, 25-10 in the 220 championship.

Junior Noah Bailey (24-5) placed third at 152 with an 8-0 major decision victory against Woodbury Central sophomore Zack Butler (28-8).

Brady Martin nabbed fourth at 145. The THS freshman moved to 25-7 after the tournament. He placed fourth after losing to Don Bosco junior Kaiden Knaack (26-5) by fall in the first period (1:34).

Wyatt Harris and Roco Gehring, both seniors, placed fifth in their respective classes.

Harris (8-3) placed fifth at 182 with an 8-4 victory against Woodbury Central senior Blasé Sanford (13-7).

Gehring moved to 18-9 with an early pin against Sergeant Bluff-Luton senior Masen Streck (14-18). Gehring got the pin 43 seconds into the match.

“The boys are starting to come together for our final push,” THS coach Brett Delich said. “Right now we are focused on sharpening a few skills to be ready to compete to qualify for state.”

THS ranked No. 5

The latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings has THS coming in at No. 5 in Class 4A.

THS placed seventh Jan. 7 at a big tournament in Jenks, Okla. And, the Chieftains dropped St. Pius X, then ranked No. 2 in Missouri, in a dual meet Jan. 10, in Tonganoxie.

THS was No. 5 as of the last rankings released Jan. 17. The latest rankings will be released after The Mirror’s print deadline.

Andale is ranked No. 1, while Rose Hill is No. 2, Augusta No. 3 and fellow Frontier League member Paola No. 4.

Rounding out the Top 10 are Clay Center, Chanute, Winfield, Independence and another Frontier League member, Baldwin.

Individually, Moore is ranked No. 1 at 132, Martin is No. 5 at 144. Ranked No. 3 at 150 is Bailey and No. 4 at 165 is Brusven.

THS has three more wrestlers ranked in 4A: Harris at 175 (No. 5), Rocco Gehring at 190 (No. 6) and Hunter Benedict at 215 (No. 5).

Tonganoxie also has four wrestlers ranked among all classes. Moore is the top-ranked wrestler overall at 132, Martin No. 7 at 144 and Bailey No. 3 at 150. Brusven is No. 8 at 165.

Baldwin Invitational next up for Chieftains

Action starts at 9 a.m. at Baldwin Junior High for this year’s Baldwin Invitational Tournament. Teams there are Baldwin, Buhler, Burlington, Eudora, Goodland, Hayden, Holton, Jeff West, Labette County, Louisburg, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Perry-Lecompton, Prairie View, Rock Creek, Santa Fe Trail and Wamego.

THS then has a dual Feb. 2 at Holton and the Frontier League meet Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Bonner Springs.

Regionals will be Feb. 18 at Baldwin.

Teams there are Atchison, Baldwin, Eudora, Holton, Royal Valley, Bishop Ward, Louisburg, Jefferson West, Ottawa, Perry-Lecompton, Santa Fe Trail, Bishop Miege, Tonganoxie, Hayden and Wellsville.

Other regional sites are Augusta, Fort Scott and McPherson. State is Feb. 24-25 at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.
