Board approves year-end bills, new hires
The Tonganoxie School Board met Thursday for a special session to discuss year-end items, and to approve hirings and resignations.
The board approved year-end bills, as well as general fund transfers and encumbrance expenditures.
Board member Darlyn Hansen excused himself when the year-end bills topic came up on the agenda because of bills pertaining to Hansen's purchasing firm, Micro Resources.
The board approved general fund transfers contingent upon $350 being transferred from a high school activity fund to the general fund. According to board president Leana Leslie, it was her understanding that the money was used to purchase a massage intended for a gift through the high school leadership class and that there was misunderstanding - that the massage was to be donated. Leslie wanted the general fund to be reimbursed for the money.
"I don't care whether it's $350, I think money needs to come back into the general fund," she said.
Superintendent Richard Erickson urged board members to consider comprehensive insurance for students at $13,700 a year, which is a reduction of about $15,000 from the previous school year.
Erickson said "it was a nice service" to provide for families, especially if they do not have primary insurance.
But board member Kay Smith did not think it was ideal for the district, because of previous issues with the insurance company the district contracted.
"It's the icing on the cake, but the cake tastes great without the icing," Smith said.
The board tabled the issue so that more information could be gathered. However, the board did approve catastrophic insurance at $1,105 for one year.
