‘Moving Day’ and more at Madrigal Feaste

By Staff | Dec 22, 2022

Tonganoxie High School vocalists perform during the Madrigal Feaste on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2022, at the Tonganoxie Middle School commons area.

It was another successful Madrigal Feaste weekend in Tonganoxie earlier this month.

The Tonganoxie High School choirs presented their 21st annual Madrigal Feaste with a matinee and evening show Dec. 10 at the Tonganoxie Middle School commons area.

This year’s show was called “Moving Day” as the performances were full of skits, songs and merriment.

The Concert Choir, Treble Choir and Chieftain Singers all performed during the shows.

Students performed “Welcome One and Welcome All” and “Masters in the Hall.” Soloists for “Masters in the Hall” were Holly Colvert, Lilly Breuer and Santiana Garcia..

Students also performed “Gloucestershire Wassail” with solos from Koleyna Newton, Emma Skelley and Tyler Baldwin.

Other songs performed were “Deck the Hall” and “Silent Night.”

The Royal Masque performed the homegrown play “Moving Day” by Thomas Gifford (THS vocal director).

Jamie Makin played the role of Steward, while Emory Stitner was player of Royal Fanfares.

Abby Vick was this year’s Jester and King (Finally) Charles was Graham Foley. Prince was Holly Colvert, Queen Consort Carmella of Cadbury was Josey Bartlett and Princess was Koleyna Newton.

Katie Denholm portrayed Zelda House, Realtor and Lilly Breuer was Philip D. House, Realtor.

Santiana Garcia was Crush, the careful box packer and Gavin Garner was Thoreau, the box loader. Joshua Duvall was Pickov and Alex Washington was Andropov.

Gifford also gave a special thanks in the program to his daughters Amelia and Bronwyn for helping him hone the script.

The play had plenty of humor, including references to Helen’s Hilltop and a region known as Lower Jarbalo (pronounced yar-balo).

For the Royal Concert, the Concert Choir performed “A Day of Joyful Singing,” “How Fair a Rose?” and “O, What is Figgy Pudding?”

The Treble Choir performed “Music’s Echo,” “You Lovers That have Loves Astray,” “I Saw Three Ships” and “We Wish You a Very Merry Christmas.”

The Chieftain Singers then performed “Carol of the Bells,” “Wannabe (as an English Madrigal)” and “The Parting Glass.”

“Wannabe” brought some laughs as well, as the Chieftain Singers took the 90s Spice Girls song and gave it an extremely retro twist.

At the end of the evening performance, Gifford talked about how the vocal department is moving into its new “castle.”

The overhaul of the Tonganoxie High School campus includes a new choir room, which the vocal department will start using when classes resume in the new year.

He noted that the department has had many homes on the campus since 2007, but now would have one that they truly can call their own.

“It’s a tiny little part, but it’s our castle,” Gifford said, referring to the room being a small but important part of the major renovations. “We’re so appreciative.

“It allows us to keep creating music. And Spice Girls songs.”

Gifford then thanked patrons again for supporting the new builds on the THS campus.

Alumni have been invited to perform the National Anthem alongside current choir members for Tonganoxie High basketball games on the first night of the Tonganoxie Invitational Basketball Tournament on Jan. 16. There also will be an open house and other festivities commemorating the new athletics wing and adjacent new additions.

Another Madrigal Feaste also meant behind-the-scenes assistance from accompanist Carolyn Day, who also assists each year with the holiday event.
