Reception to honor Susie Parmer
The public is invited to attend a retirement party for Susie Parmer from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 14 in the conference room of the Leavenworth County Courthouse.
Parmer will retire from her position as register of deeds, effective Dec. 31.
School weather dismissal information
Parents and children can tune into these stations to catch the latest on Tonganoxie school closings during inclement weather:

Post office open house Saturday
The Tonganoxie Post Office will be in the holiday spirit on Saturday as employees host an open house.
The open house will run from 9 a.m. to noon, and youngsters are encouraged to deposit their letters to Santa in the North Pole Mailbox.
Refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be awarded.
Farmers market set for the holidays
The Lawrence Farmers Market will hold its annual Holiday Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Buildings one and two at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2200 Harper, Lawrence.
Vendors from the summer market will bring to town a wide variety of homegrown and homemade items.
Among items that will be available are Cook’s Barbeque, biscuits and gravy, honey, jellies, jams, vinegars, Christmas cookies and candies, holiday breads, rolls and pies, dried and potted herbs, goat cheeses, blue corn chips, dried chile pepper strings, baskets, pottery, dried flower wreaths and arrangements, bird feed and popcorn.
Final recycling date of 1999 is Saturday
The next S.O.R.T. Recycling date is 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds, Tonganoxie.
Members of Boy Scout Troop No. 357 will be at site to collect recyclable items.
This will be the only recycling date in December because of the Christmas holiday. The next S.O.R.T. drop-off will be Jan. 8, 2000.
Celebrate lights at Shawnee Mission
The Eckerd Celebration of Lights show is open to the public from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday through Jan. 2.
This year’s presentation will include more than 200 animated characters featuring scenes such as the Lost World of the Dinosaurs, Statue of Liberty, Fantastic Light Tunnel a manger and the menorah.
A $10 donation per carload is requested or $1 per person per bus.
Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network, the children’s center at the University of Kansas Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital.
