Two major events happening in the Kansas City metropolitan area on that day and a racing event in Topeka that weekend combined with ongoing road construction will create traffic congestion.

On Saturday, Kansas State University is playing Iowa at 1 p.m. at Arrowhead Stadium and the Y’allapalooza 2000 event begins at 2:30 p.m., at Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs. Truckstock 2000 will take place Friday through Sunday at Topeka’s Heartland Park.

Construction has reduced traffic to one lane in each direction on the Kansas Turnpike between mile markers 185 and 189.5 between Topeka and Lawrence.

Traffic is reduced to one lane each direction on three projects on Interstate 70 between Junction City and Topeka.

In the Topeka area, southbound U.S. Highway 75 traffic is restricted to one lane just north of Interstate 70.

In the Kansas City metro area, traffic is reduced to one lane each direction on Interstate 70 between 118th Street and Interstate 435; the ramps from both northbound and southbound Interstate 435 to westbound Interstate 70 are closed; U.S. Highway 24-40 is closed from just east of 118th Street to Interstate 435; and the ramp from northbound Interstate 435 to westbound U.S. 24-40 is closed.

Because of the extensive construction, KDOT and the Kansas Turnpike Authority are not suggesting alternate routes.

They are recommending that on Saturday, motorists allow themselves plenty of extra time to get to their destinations.
