Downtown sidewalks raise concern
Mayor John Franiuk’s heard enough people’s concerns over workmanship on the $713,600 Fourth Street renovation project that he wants to sit down and talk about it.
“I like the project,” Franiuk said. “I think it’s going real well.”
But Franiuk agrees that some of the brickwork along the new sidewalks needs to be redone.
“We do plan on sitting down and having a meeting in the very, very near future,” Franiuk said.
Bob Muehlberger of Bob Muehlberger Concrete said rehabilitation projects sometimes pose problems.
“There are some of the areas in there that are just off a little bit,” Muehlberger said.
The contractor said he wants to work out any problems.
“Believe me, I want to please everybody out there, but you can’t do that all of the time,” he said. “We’re doing the best we can, and there’s room for improvement, and we’re going to do it.”
Among those upset with the job that’s been done so far is Don Pelzl, owner of Pelzl’s True Value. Last week, Pelzl took Franiuk on a short walking tour on the south side of Fourth Street to look over the bricks that had been laid.
“I wouldn’t pay a million dollars for this kind of work, I tell you that,” Pelzl said as he looked at the brickwork in the 600 block of Fourth Street.
In some areas, small slivers of brick were used to fill out the amount of space allotted to brickwork that surrounds the areas where trees and streetlights eventually will be installed.
Franiuk said he wants to reach a compromise over the dispute.
“There are some places where there’s a need to do some straightening out,” Franiuk said.
