Tonganoxie drains Olathe Christian at buzzer

By Shawn Linenberger - | Jan 16, 2002

Jacob Walker was the hero again.

After leading Tonganoxie in scoring against Mill Valley on Friday, Walker found the basket frequently against Olathe Christian on Tuesday in the first round of the Tonganoxie Invitational. Walker scored a team-high 18 points, but three of those couldn’t have happened at a better time.

With seconds left in regulation and the game tied at 51, Walker took a pass from Chad Turner at the top of the key, took the shot, then celebrated with a horde of fellow red-jersey Chieftians.

No. 7 Tonganoxie’s 54-51 win was dramatic, but Walker’s comments afterward were not.

“We just needed to get a shot off,” Walker said. “It was a great pass from Chad.”

With the win, Tonganoxie became the third team in the tournament to knock off the higher seed. No. 4 Bonner Springs was the only higher-rated team to advance to the semifinals.

The Chieftains will take on No. 6 Eudora, a 66-56 winner Tuesday against No. 3 Lansing.

Tonganoxie and Eudora are both 5-5 on the year.
