Rural collision claims four lives

By Lisa Scheller - | Nov 13, 2002

A 2-year-old Easton girl was the sole survivor of a wreck that killed her parents, older sister and the driver of a second vehicle last week in Leavenworth County.

The accident occurred about 4:20 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 7, on U.S. Highway 73, approximately three miles north of Leavenworth, officials said.

According to the Leavenworth Sheriff’s Depart-ment, Brigitta Averill, 24, Atchison, was heading north on the highway, driving in an “aggressive manner.”

Authorities said she apparently lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centerline and collided with a second car, which was heading south.

Averill was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s department said.

The Harris family of Easton was in the second vehicle. Jason Harris was flown to Kansas University Medical Center where he later died. His wife, Victoria, and 4-year-old daughter, Delana, died at the scene.

The second child, Danielle, was extricated from the vehicle and flown to Children’s Mercy Hospital. She was treated and released to her grandparents, police said. The wreck is still under investigation.
