Leavenworth County voters will be asked in the Nov. 5 general election whether the county should create the position.

And Daniels, who has served for two years, believes strongly that voters should say, “yes.”

Al Stevens, Leavenworth, spoke against creation of an administrator’s position.

Daniels, saying he was speaking only as one commissioner, said an administrator would serve as an advisor to the commission.

“I want to have some good advice,” he said. ” He can help us as we view problems and all their complexities.”

He said decision-making still would rest with the county’s three elected commissioners.

But Stevens said he fears a professional administrator could essentially take over the operations of county government.

“I would like to see government downsized,” Stevens said. “I think the answer is to downsize and simplify, not add another layer. The administrator will have a huge amount of influence on what the commission does, more than what I am comfortable with.”
