McLouth teen dies in crash
An 18-year-old McLouth woman was killed Sunday evening on U.S. Highway 24-59, northwest of Lawrence.
The accident, which occurred about 5:55 p.m. near Midland Junction, claimed the life of Carmen S. Jessup, who was driving a 2001 Ford sport utility vehicle.
The Kansas Highway Patrol provided this account of the accident: Jessup was traveling west on 24-59 when her vehicle left the right-hand side of the road.
She apparently tried to return to the road and lost control after she overcorrected. Her vehicle rolled several times and came to rest facing south in the westbound lane. Jessup, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle.
A passenger in Jessup’s vehicle, Timothy D. Skaggs, 20, Tonganoxie, was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, hospital officials said. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, the highway patrol said.
The accident scene is near the intersection of U.S. Highway 24-59 and Wellman Road — near the Midland Junction Farm Store.
Sunday’s accident was the second fatality and third injury accident along that stretch of two-lane highway during November.
An obituary for Miss Jessup appears on page 2A of today’s edition of The Mirror.
