Tonganoxie teens appear in musical

By Lisa Scheller - | Jun 11, 2003

Two local youths are taking to the stage this week. Colby Craig and Devin Hughey have roles in “A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum.”

The musical production will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and June 19-21, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday and June 22 at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Devin, who is a 2003 THS graduate, is the son of William and Diana Hughey. Colby, a 2002 THS graduate, is the son of Dan and Melinda Craig. Both have full theater scholarships at KCKCC, and both participated in various plays and musicals in high school.

In the upcoming musical, Devin plays the role of Hero, a teenage boy who has found true love. Colby plays the part of Pseudolus, a slave who dreams of freedom. Both are feature roles.

Colby said his favorite song that he sings in the musical is “Free,” a duet. The music and lyrics were written by Stephen Sondheim.

Both Colby and Devin hope to continue studying acting after they finish studies at KCKCC.

Other productions that Colby and Devin have participated in with the Wyandotte Players include: “West Side Story,” “Annie,” “Working” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

Both teens hope to become professional actors, but have other plans for backup.

“If the acting career doesn’t work, then I’ll go back to school and get a teaching degree,” Devin said. “Then I’d like to be a drama coach or a forensics coach.”
