Tonganoxie girls survive, will play in substate title game Saturday
Tonganoxie dodged a sizable orange and black bullet Thursday in the semifinals of the Class 4A Sumner substate Thursday in Kansas City, Kan.
Bonner Springs led throughout much of the game with a stall offense.
But Kelley Stauch put Tonganoxie up, 34-32, with 17 seconds left in the game.
With 5 seconds left, Bonner Springs called timeout and drew up one last play — a three-pointer.
In the first meeting this season, a late foul call sent THS to the foul line and helped the Chieftains win a nail-biter against the Braves.
On Thursday, it was Bonner Springs’ turn to step to the free-throw line late in the game.
Bonner Springs shot a final three. It was a miss — but Braves shooter Kelsey Stangrough was fouled.
With a chance to either win or tie at the free-throw line, she missed all three.
Tonganoxie survived, 36-32, and will pay at 6 p.m. Saturday against Sumner — the team Tonganoxie defeated in last year’s substate title game at Basehor-Linwood..
The Chieftains improved to 21-1 with the win against the Braves.
