Tonganoxie public library schedules special reading events
Kansas Reads … to Preschoolers, a project of the Kansas State Library, is the opportunity for Kansans to make a difference in the life of a child. The goal is again to read to all Kansas children, who are from birth to age 5, during National Children’s Book Week, Nov. 13–19. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has agreed to serve again as honorary chair of the program.
We will read “Bunny Cakes,” by Rosemary Wells, the book selected for this year’s Kansas Reads to Preschoolers program, at the Tonganoxie Public Library at a special Good Night Bunny Story time at 7 p.m. Thursday. This will be a repeat of the Monday morning story time.
At 10 a.m. today, the library and the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission will sponsor a “Bunny Cakes” pre-school craft at the library. Each family attending one of these events will be presented with a copy of the book, courtesy of the library.
Reading to babies, toddlers and preschoolers positively affects their short- and long-term reading capacity.
A child develops language skills long before being able to speak and develops literacy skills long before being able to read.
¢ To sign up for craft time, to volunteer to help, to donate funds to buy books or for more information, call library director Sharon Moreland at the library, (913) 845-3281, or send an e-mail to director@tonganoxielibrary.org.
Early childhood experts have found that reading to a child 20 minutes each day will enable him or her to hear one million words in a year and will expand his or her vocabulary by 1,000 words. It is no exaggeration to say that how well children learn to read directly affects how successful they are in school and how well they do throughout life.
Read “Bunny Cakes” to “somebunny” you love. The children of Kansas will benefit from your support.
