But there she was about noon under the large tent dubbed the “Big Top.”

The 6-year-old Bonner Springs girl was digging in at the annual pie contest. She won the youth age division and said she hadn’t planned on entering the contest when she got to the fair Saturday.

“It was kind of hard to get the last few bites,” Iommi said with a smile.

Each participant had to eat a piece of pie without use of each participant’s hands.

The prize for winning? A whole pie.

Iommi received a chocolate chip crème pie, which she said happened to be her favorite.

In the older youths category, Blaine McDougal of Leavenworth won the top spot in pretty quick time. He said he didn’t have practice with pie consumption.

In the adult category this year, another Leavenworth resident, Major Colmbs, was the winner.

Like McDougal, Colmbs made quick work of the dessert in front of him.

“I’m good at eating,” Colmbs said. “It’s my favorite hobby.”

This year’s fair

Fair board president David Todd said the fair went smoothly overall. The heat and then the downpour Friday weren’t ideal — the mud run was called off Friday because the rain chased away much of the crowd — but he was pleased.

Todd said there was a meeting among exhibitors, stressing that people need to take good care of their animals and themselves with consuming good amounts of water and staying hydrated.

He said there weren’t any issues because of the heat at this year’s fair.

Next year’s fair will be Aug. 9-13, 2011.
