Face to Face: Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce’s Greg Orscheln
Name: Greg Orscheln
Born: Kansas City, Mo.
Family: Wife, Susan; sons, Greg (51), Mike (50), Pat (49) and Kevin (44); and 11 grandchildren.
Occupation: Management consultant. Orscheln also is a board member with the Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce.
Dream job as a child: To own and operate his own trucking company.
Interesting fact: Orscheln had an offer to play professional baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies. His parents didn’t think he should accept it and instead thought his future was in the family business. During the summer before his sophomore season at Notre Dame, a scout had Orscheln do a workout before offering him a contract. Also at ND at the time: future Boston Red Sox center fielder Carl Yastrzemski.
Digging deeper: Orscheln graduated from Rockhurst High school before heading to Notre Dame. After his sophomore year, he decided to return to the area and eventually graduated from Rockhurst College. He got married when he was 21.
Orscheln managed a truck line in Macon, Mo., before working for five years as a stockbroker for a New York Stock Exchange company in Kansas City, Mo. He returned to the trucking business and later owned his own shipment business before selling the business in 2007 to two men who had with him for the past 10 years.
Since then, Orscheln has worked as a business adviser/consultant. A Lenexa resident, he has advised businesses in Tonganoxie and continues to be a board member for the Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce.
“I see Tonganoxie as a very appealing community to live in and to work in,” Orscheln said. “It’s a beautiful setting. Lots of attractive amenities and remarkable potential for the future.”
