Former Tonganoxie High wrestling standout Ross Starcher has taken the reins of the Chieftain program after spending the last six years as an assistant coach.
Tonganoxie High put six wrestlers in the finals of the Randy Starcher Memorial Tournament on Saturday at the THS gymnasium.
None of them disappointed as the Chieftains finished 6-0 in those matches.
Aiden McClellan in the 106-pound division, Patterson Starcher at 113, Gad Huseman at 120, Caden Searcy at 126, Dalton Tavis at 145 and Asher Huseman at 152 all won their matches.
The Chieftains wrestled hard in front of the home crowd as THS also scored three bronze medals: Cameron Cash took third at 113, as did Garrett Martin (138) and Devin Duncan (160).
Duncan, who moved up from junior varsity for the meet, had one of the more exciting finishes of the day.
Trailing Royal Valley’s Garrett Rodewald, 8-6, late in the match, Duncan scored a takedown and forced overtime. In the extra period, Devin scored two more points with another takedown and won, 10-8. Duncan improved to 4-1 on the year after the third-place victory, while Rodewald fell to 10-2.
“It was clutch,” THS assistant Scott Underwood said.
Head coach Ross Starcher agreed.
“He stepped in,” Starcher said. “He’s a freshman, too. That’s big for him in building his confidence.”
The tournament has special meaning for the Starcher family.
The tournament honors Randy Starcher, who died in 1993 in a vehicle accident at the age of 16. He was coach Ross Starcher’s cousin and current THS wrestler Patterson Starcher’s uncle. On the medal stand, Patterson wore his uncle’s letter jacket upon receiving his first-place medal.
Others placing at Saturday’s tourney were Holden Degraff (106) taking fourth, Trevor Burns (120) ninth, Zeb Huseman (132) fourth, Sam Coffin (138) 10th, Justin Hand (145) eighth, Andrew Dent (152) fifth, Cody Knight (160) eighth and Marcus Barnes (170) fourth.
THS placed second overall with 216.5 points, 46 points behind team champion Shawnee Heights.
Ross Starcher said he was pleased with how his team performed, noting the team doesn’t have wrestlers in the 182, 195 or heavyweight divisions. Tonganoxie’s 220-pounder, Brad Williams, was out due to illness. That’s four open classes in which they couldn’t pick up points.
He said the team isn’t clicking 100 percent on all cylinders, but it’s doing well for this time of year.
“There’s always room for improvement,” he said. “If you asked any of the six guys who won, they would tell you there’s something they can improve.”
The team will take some time off during break and then do some fun activities before school starts back up, such as play basketball and have a lock-in for team building.
