Tonganoxie cheer teams qualify for national tournaments

Local cheer teams are heading to national competitions after a successful day last month in Johnson County.

The Studio Chanel cheer teams competed Dec. 15 at the Kansas City Christmas Celebration at Blue Valley West High School.

Studio Chanel, which is in Tonganoxie, had all four of its teams take first place in their respective divisions.

The Pearls won the “tinys” division (ages 4-5), while Mystic Fire won first in youth (6-11).

Onyx, the junior team, won its division level and grand champion of all levels (14 and younger).

And the Diamonds, the senior division team, won first at its level and grand champion for the entire division (18 and younger).

All four earned bids to compete March 22-23 at the Crown Jubilee Championship in Garland, Texas, near Dallas.

The Diamonds won’t be able to compete in Texas because of a scheduling conflict with some team members.

However, Onyx and the Diamonds also earned bids to compete March 28-30 at the Amazing Championship in Hollywood, Calif.

Coach and studio owner Chanel Reiling said the squads would be looking at fundraising in advance of the competitions.

Last year, teams did a Daddy-Daughter Dance at the Chieftain Room on the Tonganoxie High School campus as a fundraiser. She said the group still was deciding whether to have another dance this year.

Reiling said all four teams did an “amazing” job at their first competition of the new season.

“The season has just begun and we are all looking forward to a fantastic year ahead,” Reiling said.
