Kurt Olson

Name: Kurt Olson

Born: Sioux City, Iowa. Olson grew up in Omaha, Neb.

Family: Olson has three older brothers and is an animal lover who hopes to have pets once he settles in.

Occupation: Manager at Brothers Market in Tonganoxie.

Dream job as a child: Major League Baseball player.

“When I found out I was too short, too slow and couldn’t hit a curve, I decided that wasn’t the best career for me,” Olson said.

Digging deeper: Olson graduated from Millard High School in Omaha and attended the University of Nebraska-Kearney for a year before getting into the wholesale food industry.

“I was a part-time sacker and stocker in high school in a grocery store,” Olson said. “So I never really got too far from it. I did the same thing in college.

He had friends in the wholesale grocery business that got him “hooked into it.”

Olson has been in the grocery business 36 years. He most recently worked with Affiliated Foods Midwest in Norfolk, Neb., which now is Brothers Market’s supplier. He called on the Brothers Market’s in Iowa when he was in Norfolk.

Olson has been with Brothers Market for two months and has appreciated the warm welcome in Tonganoxie.

“Everybody in the business community has been very helpful to me,” Olson said. “Everyone here is so nice and willing to help and wants us to be successful. I hope we can deliver for them, and I know we will.”

Olson also has managed drug stores, convenience stores, and a gift and retail shop in the Omaha airport. He once was a sales representative for Nabisco and also a meat cutter, though most of his career has been in the grocery business.

“We’re really in the people business, we just happen to sell groceries, is what I always like to say,” Olson said.

When not managing the store, Olson likes to keep up on sports.

He’s a diehard fan of University of Nebraska athletics, as well as the Kansas City Royals. He even was at Kauffman Stadium when it first opened in 1973.
