Mother Nature granted Connie Torneden her wish.
Though a bit windy at times Saturday, the weather couldn’t have been much better for this year’s Tonganoxie Days.
“People aren’t sweating,” Torneden joked Saturday morning. “That’s good.”
Fourth Street was bustling as visitors were stopping to check out various craft and food booths.
Torneden noted that there were about 100 booths at Saturday’s event.
A couple carnival booths and the Tonganoxie High School cheerleaders spot also were popular. Paying customers could throw sponges covered in whipped cream at the cheerleader and yell leader’s faces.
Musical performers took turns performing for passersby throughout the day, while 4-H’ers kept busy running a petting zoo filled with goats, chickens and rabbits for children.
Elsewhere Saturday, the barbecue championships were going strong at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds and the car show at VFW Park.
At noon, American Legion Post 41, Legion Riders and Women’s Auxiliary members conducted a flag-folding demonstration in honor of Flag Day, which happened to be Saturday.
Legion members also explained symbols for each fold of the flag. There generally are 12 folds.
For instance, the first fold is to be a symbol of life; the third fold is in honor and remembrance of veterans departing their ranks and giving a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
The seventh fold honors the armed forces, the eighth honors mothers and the ninth womanhood. The 10th fold is a tribute to fathers.
Saturday’s festivities finished with ATV/bike races at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
As is tradition, the Tonganoxie Library Run for the Books kicked off the festivities.
