Beware of the Flock

By Shawn Linenberger - | Aug 19, 2015

Some birds might be confusing the Sunshine State with the Sunflower State.

Flamingos generally aren’t seen in these parts, but a flock of them — of the plastic variety — have been migrating from neighborhood to neighborhood in Tonganoxie.

Team Tongie is “flocking” yards as a fundraiser throughout August.

The process is simple.

People can contact a Team Tongie member about flocking someone’s yard. They can request 10 birds in a yard for $20, 20 birds for $40 or 50 birds for $75 (all 50 in one yard or 25 in two different yards).

The “donor” also can remain anonymous if they wish.

The pink flamingos are placed in the yards at night and remain there for 24-48 hours, depending on when they need to migrate to another yard.

Anyone interested in flocking a friend’s yard should contact a Team Tongie member with the name of the person to be flocked, street address, flock size and if there’s a specific night the donor would like the yard flocked.

Contact Diane at 913-645-4726, Debbie at 913-669-6935 or Teri at 785-331-7807. Organizers will ensure that the flamingos make a safe landing in one’s yard of choice.

Just since Aug. 1 more than $1,100 in donations have been raised as requests keep coming in.

More information can be found at teamtongie.com at its “Beware of the Flock” link or on Team Tongie’s Facebook page.

Team Tongie started as a way to assist families in need of assistance when unexpected health issues and other crises arise.

Team Tongie now is a United Way agency in Leavenworth County and is nonprofit organization.
