Tonganoxie Elementary third-graders make annual visit to historic site and museum

Tonganoxie Community Historical Society and Museum volunteer Sarah Kettler talks to students Monday at the Honey Valley School on the Tonganoxie Community Historic Site campus. Third-graders from Tonganoxie Elementary School have been making the annual field trip to the campus for more than 15 years.Roughly 120 students in six TES third-grade classes visited the campus in identical morning and afternoon sessions, with each lasting about 2 hours, 45 minutes. There also were between 40 and 50 parents and grandparents on hand.
Bellringers were Peachez Joles, Kris Roberts, Lani Putthoff and Samantha O’Hare. They signified when it was time to head to the next session.

Tonganoxie Elementary School third-graders stepped back in time Monday with their field trip to the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society Site and Museum.
After parents and students arrived, the volunteers discussed Indigenous Peoples Day and introduced their staffs for the day.
Students learned about the one-room schoolhouse at the Honey Valley School from Janet Burnett in the morning and Sarah Kettler in the afternoon.

Lynn Jennings showed students the Plains Indians artifacts during both sessions and then Rose Mangan and Connie Torneden explained games of yesteryear. Another station was the farm and barn artifacts, which Gretchen Manus presented in the morning and afternoon.
Museum activities were the final station. Joy Lominska and Connie Torneden provided students with information at that station in the morning and then Janet Burnett and Rose Mangan handled those duties in the afternoon.

Kris Roberts said it was another successful field trip at the TCHS campus.
“They were just amazing,” Roberts said about the Monday visitors. “And it was just a beautiful day.”
The annual trip started in the mid-2000’s when Helene Miller established the program.
