Area trails among top 3 in state for holiday walks, per poll
Every Christmas, families across America head outside (weather permitting) for a touch-football game or a quick run around the block — but those traditions tend to leave out the people who actually want the fresh air most: the youngest kids, grandparents, and anyone too full from lunch to sprint down a field.
So for 2025, SportsbookReview.com, a leading sports review site, carried out a nationwide survey of 3,006 families to uncover the best Christmas Day walks in every state — gentle routes that count as a light workout, bring the whole family along, and still feel like a festive tradition.
Chieftain Trail might need to be up for consideration in the future. After all, the sidewalk trail is utilized extensively throughout the year by joggers, walkers and dog enthusiasts.
Though the trail, is not on the list, there were area trails among the most selected in the state.
Kansas’ top three 2025 Christmas Day walks for the family are:
1. Prairie Park Nature Trail, Lawrence
The Sunflower State’s top Christmas Day walk is the Prairie Park Nature Trail.
A short, level loop through prairie grasses and quiet woods. It’s the kind of place where kids can poke around looking for deer tracks while grandparents hold a steady, comfortable pace. Simple, scenic, and very doable after a big meal.
2. Keeper of the Plains River Path, Wichita
A city walk with surprisingly soothing views.
The trail is flat, wide, and the Arkansas River makes a great backdrop. Families often stroll to the iconic Keeper statue and back – enough movement to feel refreshed, but nobody breaks a sweat.
2. Shawnee Mission Paved Trail, Shawnee
The lakeside segments are perfect for a mixed crowd: no steep hills, lots of fresh air, and winter views across the water.
You can make it as short or as long as you like, which is ideal when half the group is already thinking about leftovers.
