Incumbents, newcomer prevail in Tonganoxie; voters embrace at-large spots for USD 464

Incumbents prevailed in all races in Tonganoxie in the 2023 General Election on Nov. 7, while a political newcomer won a three-person race for a school board seat.

Incumbent Stephanie Shupe won against challenger Susan Stieben in the Position 7 race for Tonganoxie USD 464 school board. Shupe won the tightest local race with 749 votes to Stieben’s 720. Shupe won with 50.54% of the vote to Stieben’s 48.58%. There also were 13 write-in votes.

In the USD 464 Position 2 race, Ryan Brune won with 691 votes or nearly 47%. former state representative Connie O’Brien finished second with 620 votes or nearly 42%. Scott M. Elliott had 163 votes (11%). The three candidates were vying for the seat currently held by Kaija Baldock, who opted not to run for re-election. Baldock defeated O’Brien four years ago and won her second term.

USD 464 Board President Justin Sturgeon ran unopposed for Position 3. He had 1,080 votes. There also were 79 write-in votes.

In Position 1, no candidates filed for the seat currently held by Drew Overmiller. In what turned out to be a two-person write-in race, Linda Vernon won with 324 votes to Amy Dale’s 260. There were 106 other write-in votes cast for various people.

In the Tonganoxie City Council race, incumbents Jacob Dale and Jennifer McCutchen won re-election with 394 and 349 votes, respectively. Challenger Joshua Kleczka garnered 143 votes. Dale had nearly 44% of the vote, McCutchen nearly 39 and Kleczka almost 16%. There also were 13 write-in votes, or 1.45% of the vote.

Tonganoxie Mayor David Frese ran unopposed in his run for re-election. He received 540 votes. There also were 46 write-in votes.

Tonganoxie USD 464 voters resoundingly approved a ballot question that moves all races to at-large positions. Candidates have been required to live in specific areas of the school district to run for specific school board positions, sans one at-large seat. Now, all seven positions will be at-large seats. Yes votes won with nearly 64% of the vote, 919-523.

Voter turnout in Tonganoxie was about 18%, according to Leavenworth County Clerk Janet Klasinski.

Basehor City Council had six candidates vying for three seats last week. Vickie L. McEnroe led all voters with 445. Vernon J. Fields had 412 and Ben Sims 409 and won the other two seats. Other candidates in the race were Blake Waters (355), Hayden Maples (282) and Jeffrey Body (194).

In the Basehor-Linwood school board Position 2 race, Dayna M. Miller won re-election in a tight race with 685 votes. Miller finished with 31 more votes than Kyle Swanson (654). John Zimbelman, who also is Tonganoxie City Fire Chief, had 134 votes. Miller had 46% of the vote, while Swanson had 44%. Zimbelman finished with 9%.

Brian Christensen won the Linwood Mayoral race with 29 votes to Cassia S. Foley’s 26. There also were two write-ins. For Linwood City Council, Crystal D. Eisman had 44 votes, Craig M. Walker 38 and write-in votes 6. Three seats were up for grabs in the race.
