Iowa man dies in officer-involved shooting Saturday in Leavenworth
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has identified the man killed Saturday night in an officer-involved shooting in Leavenworth.
Micheal L. Mills, 44, of Indianola, Iowa, was shot during the incident, and later died at a local hospital, according to a release from the KBI.
The KBI will conduct an independent investigation into the shooting and then present findings to Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
The investigation is ongoing.
The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. Saturday in Leavenworth. Leavenworth Police Department requested that KBI conduct an investigation around 10
p.m. Saturday, according to reports. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to investigate.
At 8:58 p.m., Mils called 911 to request police so that he could report a crime. He also stated that he was armed.
A short time later, Leavenworth police officers arrived at a location in the 400 block of N. Fifth St., in Leavenworth.
When officers arrived, they observed Mills in the front yard of the residence. The man was armed with a knife.
Several verbal commands were given to him to stop and to drop the knife, according to the release. The man charged toward an officer and that officer fired multiple rounds striking him.
Medical aid was provided, and EMS took the man to a Leavenworth hospital. Despite
life-saving measures, Mills died from his injuries.
