Eric F. Grice, 60, Leavenworth, was sentenced Friday in Leavenworth County District Court to 18 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections following his conviction for possession of cocaine, according to a release from the office of Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.

Grice pleaded no contest on Oct. 10 to one count of possession of cocaine.

According to court documents, the charge stemmed from a Jan. 30 traffic stop near South Fourth Street and Oregon Street in Leavenworth. At roughly 12:15 a.m., a Leavenworth police officer observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Fourth Street with a defective driver-side headlight and initiated a traffic stop.

During the stop, the officer identified the driver as Grice. After dispatch returned Grice’s information, the officer informed him that he was under arrest. Grice became non-compliant, ignoring commands to exit the vehicle and rolling up the windows.

After warning Grice that the window would be broken if he refused to comply, the officer broke the window. Grice then stepped out of the vehicle and was taken into custody.

A search of Grice revealed a baggie containing a white powdery substance in the front pocket of his jeans. The substance later tested positive for cocaine.

Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said the case illustrates the importance of officer safety and compliance during traffic stops.

“Traffic stops are one of the most unpredictable parts of law enforcement’s job,” Thompson said. “This case serves as a reminder that cooperation with lawful commands helps keep both the public and officers safe.

“We appreciate the work of the Leavenworth Police Department in bringing this case forward.”
