AG SPECIAL SECTION: Statistics for Leavenworth, Jefferson counties

Farms in Leavenworth County cover about 150,000 acres, according to the most recent United States Department of Agriculture statistics.

The USDA releases the statistics every five years, with the last numbers coming out in 2022.

No-till farming makes up the largest percentage of farms’ land-use practices in the county at 18%. Reduced till is 10%, Intensive till 5% and cover crop 7%.

Most farms in Leavenworth County are 10-49 acres (377), while the next range of farms, 50-179, are close behind at 359.

There are 136 farms anywhere from 1-9 acres and then 98 farms between 180-499 acres. As for farms between 500 and 999 acres, there were 28 in 2022 and another 25 were 1,000 acres or more.

Jefferson County farms’ land-use practices are 21% for no-till, 9% for reduced till and 3% for intensive till. There are 6% of farms that have cover crop.

The most common size of farms in Jefferson County are in the 50-179 acre range (309), the 10-49 range being second (276). There are 129 in the 180-499 range, 56 in the 1-9 range and 35 at 1,000 acres or more.

Jefferson County has more than 187,000 acres of farmland. The breakdown in Jefferson County is as follows: 105,932 for cropland, 59,683 for pastureland, 14,884 for woodland and 6,837 for other. Leavenworth County is at 98,949 for cropland, 26,623 for pastureland, 17,609 for woodland and 7,822 for other.

Leavenworth County ranks second in the state in sale of fruits, tree nuts and berries and fourth in cultivated Christmas trees and short rotation woody crops. Leavenworth County also ranks sixth in nursery, greenhouse, floriculture and sod and is ninth in vegetables, melons, potatoes and sweet potatoes.

As for livestock, it ranks No. 6 in horses, ponies, mules, burros and donkeys.

Jefferson County ranks No. 8 in fruits, tree nuts and berries. It ranks No. 73 in crops and No. 78 in livestock, poultry and products overall.

Leavenworth County ranks No. 79 in crops and No. 95 in livestock, poultry and products. Those rankings are all out of 105 counties.

In Leavenworth County, 83% of farms had internet access, 9% sell directly to consumers, 13% hire farm labor and 97% are family farms.

In Jefferson County, 78% have internet access, 8% sell directly to consumers, 16% hire farm labor and 95% are family farms.
