Tonganoxie City Council Chambers are moving to the former public library at Third and Bury streets. In-person meetings also available for viewing on a city YouTube Channel could start with the Jan. 19 regular meeting.

An annexation of roughly 82 acres of land between U.S. Highway 24-40 and 222nd Street west of Tonganoxie Business Park, which first was proposed in fall 2023, came one step closer to reality Monday night.

The council OK’d a proposed new ordinance, 4-0, after months of back and forth on a resolution, with road right-of-way being at the crux of the Leavenworth County Commission’s concerns.

The topic now goes back to the county for consideration.

Resident asks for speed-limit reduction in residential area

Neil Bralley spoke to the City Council during public comment about speed-limit concerns in a residential area.

He noted that Sycamore Street in a residential area had a 30 mph limit, while Fourth and Main streets had 20 mph limits.

“I think good judgment should prevail and be closer to 20 mph,” Bralley said about Sycamore Street.

City Manager George Bratkovic said typically speed limits are tied to ordinances, with residential being 30 mph and historic downtowns, for instance, 20 mph. Some speed limits have changed in the past due to residential petitions.

In other business, the council:

• Approved, 4-0, special-event permit and public firework display permit applications for a second annual military show and World War II re-enactment event June 21. The event will be in and around VFW Park.

• Approved, 4-0, the 2025 Tonganoxie Days funding request of $7,500

• Approved a bid for sanitary sewer main television inspection services for the 2025 program. The council approved a low bid from Ace Pipe Cleaning for $692.80. The other bid was from Hydro Klean for $900.
