Tonganoxie High state discus champions Adalyn Schooler and Tucker McGuire hold certificates at Monday’s Tonganoxie City Council meeting. The city recognized the two student-athletes, who swept the Class 4A girls and boys discus titles a few weeks ago at the state championships in Wichita. THS throws coach Matt Thierolf, back left, joined council members and Mayor David Frese.

A power outage couldn’t stop Tonganoxie’s latest state champions from being recognized at a City Council meeting.

Tonganoxie’s Tucker McGuire and Adalyn Schooler were recognized during the City Council meeting for sweeping the Class 4A boys and girls state discus titles last month in Wichita.

Mayor David Frese opened the meeting, but minutes later the electricity went out as much of the city was without power for what would be more than an hour Monday night.

The council continued conducting the meeting, as THS throws coach Matt Thierolf spoke about his two student-athletes’ accomplishments.

McGuire, a senior, threw a career-best by some 13 feet at state on his way to a state title. Schooler, a sophomore, also won a state title. Thierolf noted that all of her throws were better than the rest of the field in the 4A girls competition.

McGuire placed fifth at state in 2024 as a junior and was third at both the Frontier League meet and at regionals this year.

Schooler took third at state as a freshman in 2024 and was second at both league and regionals this year.

Frese congratulated the duo for their state titles and said they brought honor to the community with their efforts.

Council OKs 2025 street maintenance

Council members approved a low bid of $137,730 with Little Joe’s Asphalt for street maintenance.

The Council unanimously approved the measure, 4-0, with Council Member Loralee Stevens absent.

Other bids were received from JM Fahey ($156,424), McAnany Construction ($162,052) and Metro Asphalt ($176,596).

Member discusses Tonganoxie Days

Council Member Jake Dale commended city staff for assistance with Saturday’s Tonganoxie Days festivities.

That included assistance from Assistant City Manager Dan Porter and City Superintendent Kent Heskett when there was an issue with power at Gallagher Park. The issue occurred before the headlining band was set to perform, but the show eventually went on .

“It’s great to see people come together,” Dale said.
