10 years ago: June 6, 1990

More than 300 members, families and friends came together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Sunday, June 3, 1990. (History of the church followed, with pictures.)

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph (Joe) Lisson of Linwood will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, June 9, with a 1 p.m. thanksgiving mass at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie. (Picture)

Birth: Gary and Pam Lamb announce the birth of their son, Jared Allan, who was born May 25, 1990.

Deaths: Lois Pauline Jennings, 59, Bonner Springs, died May 25, 1990; Homer M. “Mutt” Jeffers, 78, Basehor, formerly of Bonner Springs, died May 22, 1990; DeAnna Faye Spangler, 49, Lenexa, died May 28, 1990; Willis E. Peters, 89, Carlton, Ore., died May 25, 1990.

Carl and Beverly Folsom held a barbecue birthday party on Sunday, June 3, for eight members of the family.

(Picture) The Clark family gathered at the Tonganoxie Nursing Center on the evening of June 1, 1990. They came to celebrate the presentation of a college equivalent course completed by 81-year-old Mary Clark. The presentation was made by Mary’s son, Harold Clark. Mary fulfilled the requirements of the Seminary Institute New Testament course of study prescribed by the Education System of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, dated April 27, 1990.

25 years ago: June 5, 1975

An antique auto picnic and display were held Sunday at the Carl Barnhart farm. A nice crowd was on hand to view automobiles dating back into the 1920s.

(Picture) Dr. Kyle W. LaRosh will be taking of the veterinary practice of Dr. Gary Zimmerman. Zimmerman is leaving to practice in California.

Deaths: Burr Cowan Corlett, Dodge City, formerly of Tonganoxie, age 79, passed away June 1, 1975. Paul Heiser, 71, San Angelo, Texas, passed away May 28, 1975.

The annual reunion of the R.E. Courtney family will be held at the 4-H building in Tonganoxie on June 8, 1975.

John S. Davoren, Tonganoxie, was among 37 students in the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps at the University of Kansas who were given awards at the annual honors ceremony in May. Mr. Davoren is a business senior. He was awarded the Strike Force Award, Rifle Team Award, Army ROTC Scholarship, Academic Achievement Wreath, Physical Training Award, Superior Cadet Award, Outstanding Performance of Duties Award for Continuous and Exceptional Meritorious Service.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bleakley, Tonganoxie, will have their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday, June 6.

(Pictures) What started out 10 years ago as a hobby has become a “dream come true,” according to Mrs. C.W. Ridgway.

Mrs. Ridgway has been talking about the pick-your-own-strawberry that she and C.W. Ridgway own.

The strawberry hobby has grown to a point where the Ridgways have five acres of strawberries in production. Mrs. Ridgway said that in the five acres there were 29,000 plants.

50 years ago: June 29, 1950

Deaths: Walter H. Reed, former Tonganoxie resident, died in Milwaukee, Wis., June 12, at the age of 66; William Leo Taylor, Leavenworth, passed away June 23, 1950, at the age of 62; Dale Bryant, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Bryant, Leavenworth County, drowned in the Kaw on Tuesday. Mrs. Otis Umbenhower, 18, drowned last Friday afternoon while swimming in a pond on a farm near Ottawa. Mrs. Umbenhower was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Lowe, who farm in the Hoge neighborhood.

Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Redding announce the birth of their son, Alfred Roy, born June 26. Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Black are the parents of a son, born June 27.

Tourist cars are getting thick on U.S. 24-40. Some are in a helluva hurry. Few smashups here and there and occasionally somebody killed. But most cars are driven carefully and with courtesy signal to help the other fellow. It pays.

75 years ago: May 28, 1925

Miss Dorothy Henry has returned home from Nashville, Kan. Where she has taught in the Nashville High School the past year.

Greever Allan met with an accident Tuesday morning when cranking their Ford and received a severely sprained wrist.

J.W. Foster is the first to report new potatoes ready for use.

Stranger: Oliver Parsons, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Parsons, suffered a serious injury to his right hand Sunday morning. He went to the windmill to turn on the water and their bull was tied to the windmill and when he attempted to move the rope by which the animal was tied in some matter his hand became caught in the loop of the rope and was badly burned and mangled, the thumb being nearly severed from his hand. The member was put in place and it is hoped it can be saved.

Art Carpenter left last Friday for Leavenworth where he has a job at this trade as a carpenter.

Mrs. Harry Sorenson spent last Sunday in Kansas City visiting with her mother, Mrs. Arthur Dole.

Last Friday evening one of the big Inter-state Stage Line busses enroute toward Lawrence caught fire at the west end of Fourth Street. The Tonganoxie Fire Department was summoned and made a hasty run to its assistance and the fire which was blazing high in the air in the front of the bus was easily extinguished and in time to prevent an explosion of the gasoline tank, thereby saving it with only slight damage.

100 years ago: June 7, 1900

Fairmount: Grandma Yoakum is our welcome guest this week.

Stanwood: Alton Swain and family, who live near Reno, spent Sunday with relatives here.

Jarbalo: William Seifert gave a dance in his barn Saturday night and a big crowd was expected.

The brick for the new I.O.O.F. hall is being unloaded.

Charles Hemple has started work on a 10-room house, on his place adjoining town on the south.

Miss Leah Martin left yesterday morning for Osawatomie, where she has secured a position at the insane asylum.

A smooth-faced kid with red hair was around town this week, talking up orders for a liquor house of Kansas City.

Miss Emily Smith, of Kansas City, visited at home Sunday. It is reported that she will be one of a party of ladies from Kansas City who will visit the Paris exposition.

J.C. Laming will leave next Wednesday for England to visit his parents and will be gone two or three months, taking in the Paris exposition while away. He will be accompanied by John Wilkins who lives near McLouth.
