Local church plans all-day prayer vigil

By Caroline Trowbridge - | Sep 4, 2002

In observance of the Sept. 11, 2001, national tragedy, the Tonganoxie United Methodist Church will hold a prayer vigil next Wednesday.

The vigil begins at 6 a.m. and concludes at midnight, in the chapel. All church members, as well as other member of the community, are welcome to participate, according to Dorothy Bloomberg, one of the organizers of the vigil.

“We’ve asked them to sign up for 20 minutes at our church,” she said. “We have a chart they can sign up on.”

The idea for a prayer vigil came from the Rev. Paul Waters, who

became pastor at the Methodist Church in late June. He asked members of a Wednesday morning prayer group whether they would like to help with the vigil, Bloomberg said, and the response was positive.

“We have been planning this for a month or more,” she said.

Bloomberg encouraged anyone who is interested in participating to call or drop by the church, Fourth and Green streets, 845-2814.

“We’ll have a format laying there for prayer, if they want to use that,” she said. “It’s just suggestions.”

No formal service or ceremony is planned.

“It’s just going to be a prayer vigil,” she said.

On Wednesday, members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post plan to fly American flags throughout downtown Tonganoxie. At 7:30 a.m. next Wednesday, they will lower the flag in VFW Park to half-staff.

And two days later, Sept. 13, the post’s rifle squad will participate in a ceremony at the Bonner Springs-Tonganoxie football game, which will be played in Bonner Springs.

“We’ll do it before the game and at halftime,” said Art Miller, commander of the local post. “They want us to present the colors with a rifle squad, and they want a person from the police department, the fire department and the medics because they’re honoring them.”
