Tonganoxie, McLouth assigned substates
The Tonganoxie girls team will take a No. 2 seed into their Class 4A substate in Holton, according to brackets released by the Kansas State High School Activities Association on Thursday.
The Chieftains (10-9) will take on No. 7 Atchison (5-14), a team Tonganoxie defeated in the season opener. The teams will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Tonganoxie.
At 12-8, Jeff West is the top seed and earned a bye. The Tigers will play Friday against the winner of No. 4 Holton (8-12) and No. 5 Hiawatha (8-12). No. 3 Lansing and No. 7 Perry-Lecompton are also in the tournament. If Lansing and Tonganoxie win, they would play for the third time this season. The teams split the regular season series, although Tonganoxie won the last contest, 54-52, on Feb. 21 in Lansing.
The substate championship will be at 6 p.m. Saturday.
In the boys bracket, Lansing and Tonganoxie will play for the fourth time this season. Lansing has won all three contests this season, taking two games in overtime and a third, 67-51, Friday in Lansing. No. 1 Lansing (14-5) and No. 8 Tonganoxie (4-15) will play at 7 p.m. Monday in Lansing.
As for McLouth, both Bulldog teams will be lower seeds in a Class 2A substate in Horton.
The No. 5 McLouth boys (8-11) will play at 7 pm. Monday in Winchester against No. 4 Jefferson County North (8-11). The Chargers defeated McLouth, 83-51, in earlier this season.
The McLouth girls (6-14) will be the No. 8 seed when the play Tuesday at Horton against the top-seeded Chargers (16-3).
