The event took place Saturday and Sunday at Skyway Lanes Bowling Center in Leavenworth. It attracted roughly 90 bowlers, said Mona Kerns, vice president of the Leavenworth County chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

“It went very well,” Kerns said. “I was very encouraged by the first year turnout.”

To match a Big Brother or Big Sister to a youth, it costs about $1,000 a year, meaning that last weekend’s fund-raiser should help match 15 Leavenworth County youths to adults.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake is a nationwide fund-raiser for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1904. It is the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States.

In Douglas County, Kerns said that Big Brothers/Big Sisters chapter raised about $85,000 at its bowling event.

Although Leavenworth County didn’t raise that much money, she was encouraged by local residents’ efforts. Unlike in Douglas County, Leavenworth County’s chapter is young — it was established last May.

“We had such a good turnout,” Kerns said. “Lots of enthusiasm. Everyone was there for a great cause. They did a wonderful job of recruiting bowlers and gathering pledges.”
