Chieftain golf wins Spring Hill Invitational

By Justin Nutter - | Apr 19, 2012

Less than a week after one of its toughest outings of the season, the Tonganoxie High golf team has earned another trophy.

The Chieftains won the Spring Hill Invitational on Thursday, posting a team score of 318 at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course.

“For whatever reason, we play pretty good here at this course,” coach Jared Jackson said. “I was definitely really happy with everyone.”

Four THS golfers finished in the top-10 individually. Senior Colby Yates led the way, winning the individual title with a 75, and fellow senior Kody Campbell took sixth with a 79. Sophomore Drew Sandburg and senior Tanner Hale each carded an 82. Sandburg finished ninth and Hale 10th after a scorecard playoff.

Junoirs Aaron Williams and Tyler Hall both rounded out the Chieftains’ individual scoring with marks of 94.

The title is the team’s second this season and its first since the Sunflower Classic on March 24. Jackson’s squad struggled in its last action — a sixth-place finish Monday at the Hayden Invitational — but the Chieftain head coach said Thursday’s success stemmed from two productive days of practice.

“We practiced like we needed to practice,” he said. “We didn’t play, but we had a real good practice on Tuesday. Sometimes, that’s what you need to do. (Wednesday), we played a few holes and just got back into it.”

THS will have a short turnaround before its next competition, as it will play in the WIchita Collegiate Invite at 3 p.m. on Friday. The tournament will be played at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney.
