Lawrence police conduct interviews after a shooting at The Jayhawk Cafe, 1340 Ohio St., on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026.

The 18-year-old who was shot to death at a Lawrence bar early Saturday was Aidan Knowles, of Shawnee, according to Lawrence police.

Police on Sunday shared a Facebook post by Knowles’ father, Bobby Knowles, identifying his son as the victim and saying the family was “completely devastated.”

“Unfortunately, the news is true,” the post said. “Our son, Aidan, was shot and killed outside a bar in Lawrence early yesterday morning. One of his close friends was also shot and, by the grace of God, survived against all odds.”

Bobby Knowles wrote that his son was “simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Monday afternoon, Lawrence police also confirmed that social media posts listing Brady Clark as the 16-year-old boy who was also shot during the incident were accurate. The social media posts didn’t provide a hometown for Clark, but the family posted its update to a social media app targeting residents of Linwood.

A post attributed to Clark’s parents — listed on the post as “Kristin, Chris and Jessica Clark” — said their son and Knowles were “innocent bystanders caught in the middle of a senseless act of violence.” Clark’s parents said their son suffered “critical injuries,” but survived “thanks to the tireless efforts of first responders and medical staff.”

The Facebook post from Bobby Knowles said the 16-year-old was a good friend of Aidan’s.

Bobby Knowles, who formerly worked in the Tonganoxie Police Department, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from friends and family and thanked the Lawrence Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for “handling this tragedy with professionalism, compassion, and dedication. Your bravery and commitment do not go unnoticed. We take some comfort in knowing that outstanding officers and detectives are working tirelessly to see this case through.”

He thanked emergency workers “for doing everything possible to save our son and for saving his friend’s life. And to the dispatchers who handled these calls, we know the weight you carry from moments like this. Your quick actions and professionalism mattered more than you will ever know.”

Clark’s family also thanked all emergency responders involved.

“We are incredibly thankful for KU PD, Lawrence PD, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, paramedics, and the medical teams at Children’s Mercy and Lawrence Memorial for their quick and compassionate care,” the Clark family said in its online statement. “We also appreciate everyone who has reached out with prayers, thoughts and concerns.”

As the Journal-World reported, two 18-year-olds were arrested in connection with the shootings, which occurred around closing time at the Jayhawk Cafe, better known as The Hawk, 1340 Ohio St.

One suspect — Daitron Lamont Daniels Strickland, of Shawnee — was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault, according to the Douglas County Jail booking log. A second suspect — Caiden Carl Ralph Clem, of Atchison — was arrested on suspicion of felony murder and aggravated assault.

The suspects are being held on bonds of $1 million. Because Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Douglas County District Court is closed.

Late Monday afternoon, a Lawrence Police Department spokeswoman provided the Journal-World with more information about the investigation. While the matter is still an active investigation, she said it is the department’s current understanding that the two teenagers had entered the bar’s building at some point.

However, spokeswoman Laura McCabe said that responding officers found the two wounded teenagers on the bar’s outdoor patio, near the front entrance on the building’s west side. McCabe said the department’s investigation will consider whether the bar violated any laws related to the presence of minors at a drinking establishment.

“All these details will be confirmed once the investigation is complete, including any potential repercussions for the bar,” McCabe said via email.

McCabe also provided additional details about the arrest of the two suspects. She said the shooting occurred at 1:49 a.m. and the suspects were in custody at 2:32 a.m.

“Our response to bars in the case of a shooting is the same as any shooting where crowds of people are present,” McCabe said via email. “The team did an excellent job that night of securing the scene and surrounding the area to contain the fleeing suspects and limit risk to the surrounding community.” Clark’s family has created a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses, and as of Monday evening it had raised nearly $4,900.
