General election has September, October deadlines for advance voting

By Staff | Aug 24, 2023

Election news

This year’s general election is still more than two months away, but there are some important dates to remember as the voting day draws closer.

Sept. 23 is the deadline to transmit Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act ballots.

There’s still time to register to vote, but the last day to register is Oct. 17. Leavenworth County will start mailing advance voting ballots on Oct. 18, which also is the first day registered voters can cast advance ballots in the election office at the Leavenworth County Courthouse. Oct. 31 is the last day to request advance ballots to be mailed.

There is a noon deadline Nov. 6 to vote advance voting ballots in person at the election office.

Polls are open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Election Day, which will be No. 7.

Here is a closer look at local city and school board races:

For Tonganoxie Mayor, incumbent David Frese is running for re-election. He has no challengers in his race.

In the Tonganoxie City Council race, there are two seats. Both incumbents are running for those seats, Jacob Dale and Jennifer McCutchen. A challenger, Joshua Kleczka, also will be vying for one of those two seats.

In the Tonganoxie USD 464 school board race, incumbent Justin Sturgeon is running for Position 3 unopposed, while Position 2 has three new faces vying for that position. Kaija Baldock, who is in her second term as the Position 2 representative, is not seeking re-election. Scott M. Elliott, Ryan Brune and Connie O’Brien all are running in the Position 2 race.

In the Position 7 race, incumbent Stephanie Shupe is seeking re-election against challenger Susan E. Stieben.

Position 1 is held by Drew Overmiller, but he’s not seeking re-election. No one filed for that seat.

Overmiller’s position will be filled with the highest write-in vote-getter.

If no one wins via write-in, The school board will interview candidates and vote to fill that position at a later date.

There also will be a ballot question regarding represenation on the board.

Voters will decide how future school board positions will be structured.

Tonganoxie USD 464 recently voted to put the measure on the November ballot. Currently there are six positions that require candidates to live within certain boundaries throughout the district, along with an at-large position. If voters approve the change in November, all positions will be at-large, so anyone can run regardless of where they reside in the district.

In other area races, the Linwood Mayor race is between incumbent Brian Christenson and challenger Cassia S. Foley.

In the Linwood City Council race, two incumbents, Crystal D. Eisman and Craig M. Walker, will be running unopposed.

Meanwhile, the Basehor City Council race has six candidates for three positions. Vernon J. Fields, Hayden P. Maples and Ben Sims. Challengers are Jeffrey W. Body, Vickie L. McEnroe and Blake Waters.
