Lansing Correctional Facility inmate who managed to escape custody after arranging bedding to appear like he was in his bunk has been sentenced to prison.

Stroede was found guilty of aggravated escape following a trial Dec 11. The jury deliberated for less than 10 minutes before returning their verdict. During today’s sentencing hearing, Stroede was ordered to serve 49 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections. The Wednesday, Jan. 17, sentence was ordered to run consecutively to any sentence Stroede is already serving.

According to court documents, on Aug. 30, 2022, Michael Stroede, a 44-year-old inmate who was serving 111 months on a drug-related charge, walked away from a minimum custody living unit at the Lansing Correctional Facility.

Two days later, Kansas City, Kansas, police officers located Stroede near Seventh Street and Kansas Avenue and apprehended him.

“The primary emphasis during incarceration should center on rehabilitation and personal development,” Leavenworth County Attorney Tod Thompson said. “Unfortunately, people still violate the law when in custody.

“When someone actually attempts to escape, they cause fear to citizens for their safety, time and money to those who have to eventually drag them down, and a much lengthy sentence after caught.”

Thompson and Assistant County Attorney Saber Hossinei prosecuted this case.
