Tonganoxie City Council Chambers are moving to the former public library at Third and Bury streets. In-person meetings also available for viewing on a city YouTube Channel could start with the Jan. 19 regular meeting.

The council approved a special use permit for Elle’s Bakery, which is a standalone structure outside a residence at 1005 E. Washington St.

The home-based business is at the northeast corner of East and Washington streets near Tonganoxie Elementary School.

Owner Lisa Perkins was present at the Zoom meeting and noted that she has had the home-based business for years, but previously operated from a residence in the county. Her move to the city required the special-use permit.

Perkins noted that she works full time and the bakery normally will be open on the weekends. Goods are sold by special order or some baked goods will be available without pre-orders.

Mayor David Frese had asked about hours of operation and voiced concern about the business being at an intersection that already has heavy traffic on weekdays with the start and dismissal of Tonganoxie Elementary and Middle schools nearby.

Perkins agreed with the traffic inquiry.

“It’s a concern for me to go to my job in the morning,” she said.

Perkins said she has mainly taken custom orders out of her home since 2010 when she lived in the county.

After the council approved the permit unanimously, Frese thanked Perkins for opening her shop in the city.

“Thank you for investing in our community and coming out to our meeting,” Frese said.

“I appreciate it greatly,” Perkins responded.
