Water slide time offers a reprieve from the heat Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Tonganoxie Public Library. The Tonganoxie area is under an extreme heat warning through Thursday evening.
The National Weather Service issued the warning earlier this week. According to the NWS, the extreme heat warning started at noon Tuesday and continues through 7 p.m. Thursday.
Dangerously hot conditions are expected, with heat index values up to 105-110 degrees expected. Overnight lows could be in the mid- to upper-70s at times. The NWS reminds residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms and out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. People should take extra precautions when outside and wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. They should also try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events, per the weather warning.
People also should monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates.
Those needing a place to cool off can always visit Tonganoxie Public Library, 217 E. Fourth St. The library is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and 1-5 p.m. Sundays.
The Tonganoxie Farmers Market takes place 5-8 p.m. Thursdays.
