Local police engaged in a high-speed chase about 1 a.m. and kept in pursuit for about 10 miles, ending near Lawrence Municipal Airport, according to police Chief Jeff Brandau.

Police first stopped a 29-year-old Overland Park man near U.S. 24-40 and Ridge Street for a traffic violation. During the stop the man drove off, according to Lt. Billy Naff.

During the pursuit, officers learned that the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Johnson County for aggravated escape that was issued July 6.

The chase, which was in excess of 80 mph at one point, ended near the Lawrence airport.

Officers, with assistance from Tonganoxie’s K-9 unit and a Kansas Bureau of Investigation agent, pursued the suspect on foot.

The Overland Park man was apprehended in a field and arrested for vehicle theft, possession of heroin and methamphetamine. fleeing, attempting to allude and resisting arrest.

The vehicle was stolen from Lee’s Summit, Mo., Naff said.

Officers took the man to Leavenworth County Jail. He awaits a court date in Leavenworth County District Court.
